GMAI and Gary Manuel
Salon began
the holiday season with a special event called Holliday Frenzy. The name harkens
back the first ever “frenzy” that opened services at GMAI nearly
three years ago where for one month (the first month of services) GMAI future
professionals provided full services to guests for only five dollars. Gary
Manuel revisited the idea to kick off this holiday season by offering retail
incentives to the public plus combining a charity to the mix.
The event held
in the evening this time was more of a party with food from Tom Douglas’ Serious
Pie, make-up finishing touches and GMAI’s own “hand facials”.
Ten percent of all sales at the event went to Genesis
House, a therapeutic community based residential drug treatment program
providing long-term treatment and rehabilitation for the complicated client
with multidimensional problems.
Thank you to all those that attended. We loved
having you play with us this holiday season and look forward to more frenzies.

Our Fall
Career Fair attracted over 25 Salons and Spas in attendance
as Future Professionals provided a dazzling hair show
and spa rotation. The theme this year was “Head
Strong” .Future professional conceived looks
showed skill and finesse in technically skilled cuts,
colors and make-up. Each team was responsible for providing
a model outside the institute and capturing the theme’s
essence. Take a look!:

Hello
All –
First, I’d like to take this opportunity
to officially introduce you to our online newsletter,
a work in progress. In case you have not seen this
page before; this is a section of our website designed
to post updates about the wonderful things going on
at GMAI, not to mention highlight extraordinary people,
announce our top retail sales future professionals,
keep you aware of upcoming events such as graduations
and career fairs and involve you in our community fundraising
efforts. Furthermore, it is a spot to address important
questions and cover issues about what we are really
here to do…help
build great careers in beauty and wellness. That said,
I’d like to invite you to join in the endeavor.
Put simply, what I mean is contribute to the cause
and share your wisdom. In the next few paragraphs I
explain my own bits of wisdom to launch the way. After
all, we all have something to give. So, if ever you
feel you have something, anything that a prospective
future professional, team member, network organization,
high school counselor, teacher, mom, dad, brother or
sister might gain insight from please email your thoughts
to [email protected] and I will add them here. Ask
yourself this; “what would I have liked to know
when I was passionately starting a new thing, struggling
through a rigorous situation, asked to advise a young
person struggling with doubt and worry?
Allow me to begin by sharing something I have learned
from years of working in and around salons with regard
to a common question I am often asked in admissions;
WHAT COULD A PERSON DO NOW TO
PREPARE FOR BEAUTY SCHOOL? I
get this from high school students and countless others
who have a span of time between the present and the
start date. It is a good question because people often
worry that they don’t have any talent or
skill so they inquire what classes should they take
in high school or what should they read, learn or do
to get a head start.
ANSWER: Get involved in
whatever cause that is goal oriented and largely participatory
activity that connects you to other people; fundraisers,
walkathons, club events, or any charity. Get out there
and meet people and find out who and how many people
you can attract to you and your cause. Why not start
building a clientele now and practice your skills of
connecting early? You WILL need it. Salon owners tell
me that they can hire great hair designers and estheticians,
but if they cannot connect and build business, it can
be a huge struggle getting anywhere at all. They need
good connectors. Whereas school will focus on technical
skills and prepare you for your craft, you will still
need to bring clients to you as models in the very
beginning to perform the work and eventually to provide
professional services for paying clients. So get started
with anything that allows you to exercise that skill.
A good tip is to try as many ways of doing it as possible
and finding out which way suits you best. Do you find
people best through referrals or directly? Do you send
cards to everyone you know? Record your efforts and
success rates now and you will surely have a head start
to a great career.

Gary Manuel
Aveda Institute caravanned to Gary Howse and Lindsey
Winkle’s Alma Mater, Timberline High School
in Lacey in Fall 2007. We spent the day happily
clipping and curling forty five very excited and
willing kids, and their parents and grand parents
received hand massages and nice chats. Gary, Lindsey,
Connie, Christopher, Erica, Opal, Amber, Jennifer,
Gino and Elizabeth were there from the salon. Desiree,
Mandy, Karlie and Evelyn were there from the Institute.
A reporter from The Olympian News Paper covered
the story noting that the North Thurston County
Education Foundation has been assisting needy families
for several years to help get children of all ages
ready for the upcoming school year. They supplied
back packs with much needed assorted school supplies
to put into them. The foundation serves six hundred
students a year are blessed with the good work
taking nearly eight months to accomplish. This
year Diane Phelps, District School Nurse and her “co-angels” Debby Gaffney-(Grant Administrator) and
Theresa Scott-(Early Childhood Home Visitor) collaborated with us for the first
time ever in a “Cut- a- Thon.”
Speaking for all of us I can say with out a doubt that this day was a lot of
fun and a true WIN-WIN opportunity! |

The response was phenomenal as Guests
of Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and Gary Manuel Salon
took part in Citysearch.com’s annual Best of
Citysearch poll.
Remarkably, GMAI ranked in the top three for Best
Facial. Gary Manuel Salon was voted the editorial
winner for Best Salon and, no surprise, Gary Manuel
Salon was voted the editorial
and audience winner for Color and Highlights.
Voters responded with kind words and wonderful feedback
as well. The whole Gary Manuel Team sends out a heartfelt
Thanks to everyone who voted. We promise to meet your
expectations.
