Mary
Tkack, Executive Director of Environmental Sustainability
at Aveda, visited GMAI for an educational event
on February 13th and shed light on several important
environmental issues, paying particular attention
to clean water, this years focus for Earth Month.
“To be environmentally
stable means we must protect species worldwide by supporting healthy ecosystems
and fight for cleaner air and water. To do this we must recycle everything
we can”
said
Mary Tkack in her all-school address. Tkack, who visited GMAI as part of
an ongoing effort to pump up the network about this April’s Clean Water
Fund for Earth Month 2007, explained why we need to be responsible and think
about what we are doing to the world today. Her message was clearly to encourage
recycling efforts and to help future professionals understand more about
Aveda’s
environmental mission. Though this year’s focus is water, the big
picture is always global energy. “Water is a universal concern, effects
people’s health and we need to keep at it” she said. Mary answered
questions from a highly inquisitive audience of future professionals and explained
Estee Lauder’s role in helping Aveda. She listed various conscious choices
Aveda has made to be the most environmentally responsible product company.

Below are some key questions posed by Aveda
to help everyone make more responsible environmental
choices.
Do you need it? Can you do without
it?
Can you borrow, rent or get it
gently used?
Is the project designed to minimize
waste?
Can it be smaller, lighter or
made from fewer materials?
Is it designed to be durable
or multi-functional?
Is it available in a less toxic
form? Can it be made with less-toxic
materials? (Is it certified organic
or biodynamic?)
Is it made with renewable resources?
Can it be easily recycled or
go back to the earth at the end
of its intended use?
Is reuse practical and encouraged?
Is it made with local, post consumer
recycled or reclaimed materials?
Is it available from a sociable
and environmentally responsible
company?
Is it made locally?
Do you need it? Can you live
without it?
The response was phenomenal as Guests
of Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and Gary Manuel Salon
took part in Citysearch.com’s annual Best of
Citysearch poll.
Remarkably, GMAI ranked in the top three for Best
Facial. Gary Manuel Salon was voted the editorial
winner for Best Salon and, no surprise, Gary Manuel
Salon was voted the editorial
and audience winner for Color and Highlights.
Voters responded with kind words and wonderful feedback
as well. The whole Gary Manuel Team sends out a heartfelt
Thanks to everyone who voted. We promise to meet your
expectations.
