GMAI
Learning Leader Elle Wheeler Recognized with “Leading
Through Education Example Award.”
This years 2006 Aveda Institute Summit, hosted by Aveda Institute
Minneapolis, honored education professionals from all Aveda Institutes in a
very special closing ceremony. The summit, a two day education event that encompassed
workshops on classroom and clinic floor management, including presentation
and conflict resolution training, finalized with a ceremony focused on learning
leaders with an institute director nominated award. According to the
award criteria, an educator that leads through education is an educator that
consistently demonstrates excellence in classroom and clinic management; they
passionately advocate for the development of the student; they act as a role
model and mentor to both students and faculty; they remain calm and positive-especially
when it is difficult or inconvenient to do so; they live and advocate the Aveda
mission and core beliefs; they do the right thing, even if it isn’t popular
and they tell the truth with compassion and they consider education a profession
and carry themselves accordingly. GMAI Institute Leader and staff submitted
a short essay describing how GMAI Learning Leader, Elle Wheeler, demonstrates
these qualifications and characteristics. Elle was announced at the summit
and an award was accepted in her honor. As part of an ongoing effort
to highlight excellence in education for the beauty industry the “leading
through education example” serves our learning community by allowing
great learning leaders to stand out as positive examples for all educators.
Congratulations Elle! Everyone at GMAI and the entire Aveda network honors
your leadership in education.

Aveda Salon Spa Entrepreneur, Ray
Civello from Toronto, visited GMAI for an education
workshop on success building and dynamic cutting and
styling techniques. Civello also spoke at the November
18th Graduation ceremony. He is internationally
respected for his influence on salon and spa development,
education and editorial work, and is a leader in the
beauty and fashion industry. Civello’s visit was
a truly memorable event and part of GMAI’s ongoing
mission to enrich future professionals with inspiring
educators. Throughout his stay, future professionals
shared stories and expressed that they were honored to
have such an icon in the beauty industry share wisdom
and inspiring passion.
In 1994 Mr. Civello and
his family opened Collega. As an Aveda distributor,
Collega Inc. is a resource center for salon and spa
owners across Canada, providing the best and most current
technical and business education, seasonal image trends
and wellness/lifestyle education. In 1999, Mr. Civello
became vice president of global education for Aveda,
where he made significant contributions to the Aveda
Global Purefessional™ Program
as well as the Master Jam series. In 2001, he served
as artistic director and continued his work on Aveda's
Seasonal Portfolio Image and Educational Video Collections.
His ability to combine the technical foundations of
hair styling, creativity and the principles of wellness
has greatly influenced the beauty industry.

Over
25 salons and spas attended the fourth GMAI Career
Fair this fall.
An
explosion of exaggerated styles indicative
of the modernist pulp fiction era, brought
together with the explicative “VA VA
VOOM,” was the theme for this fair’s
fall fashion show held on October 24th. . The
day was certainly full of creative “voom” from
all aspects of GMAI as FP’s mixed it
up with hard work and extreme enthusiasm.
Whereas the fashion show
portion was created by teams from four learning
phases in cosmetology (some esthetics FP’s
as makeup artists) the whole four hour event
presented a mix of inspirations from both
the cosmetology AND esthetic teams. Spa
future professionals in the “infinity
phase” had their portion of the fair
set up in the esthetics clinic area. Each
Infinity esthetics FP decorated her spa room
with visuals that represented her style and
inspiration from the crafts in today’s
skin care.
The event consisted of a
warm welcome greeting from earth phase FPs
in esthetics and cosmetology (AKA “Angels”)
a spa rotation, lunch provided by “Organics
Togo,” and a fashion show, which was
followed by the fair itself. The two hour finale
allowed salons and spas an opportunity to represent
their businesses at individual booths. Twenty
five salons and spas showed up for the event.

The response was phenomenal as Guests
of Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and Gary Manuel Salon
took part in Citysearch.com’s annual Best of
Citysearch poll.
Remarkably, GMAI ranked in the top three for Best
Facial. Gary Manuel Salon was voted the editorial
winner for Best Salon and, no surprise, Gary Manuel
Salon was voted the editorial
and audience winner for Color and Highlights.
Voters responded with kind words and wonderful feedback
as well. The whole Gary Manuel Team sends out a heartfelt
Thanks to everyone who voted. We promise to meet your
expectations.
