Over 25 salons and spas attended the fourth GMAI Career Fair this fall.

An explosion of exaggerated styles indicative of the modernist pulp fiction era, brought together with the explicative “VA VA VOOM,” was the theme for this fair’s fall fashion show held on October 24th. . The day was certainly full of creative “voom” from all aspects of GMAI as FP’s mixed it up with hard work and extreme enthusiasm.

Whereas the fashion show portion was created by teams from four learning phases in cosmetology (some esthetics FP’s as makeup artists) the whole four hour event presented a mix of inspirations from both the cosmetology AND esthetic teams.  Spa future professionals in the “infinity phase” had their portion of the fair set up in the esthetics clinic area. Each Infinity esthetics FP decorated her spa room with visuals that represented her style and inspiration from the crafts in today’s skin care.

The event consisted of a warm welcome greeting from earth phase FPs in esthetics and cosmetology (AKA “Angels”) a spa rotation, lunch provided by “Organics Togo,” and a fashion show, which was followed by the fair itself. The two hour finale allowed salons and spas an opportunity to represent their businesses at individual booths. Twenty five salons and spas showed up for the event.

When Robbie Numazawa, Esthetics FP at GMAI, learned about BEACON, a symposium and beauty business workshop for beauty school students held in conjunction with The Salon Association (TSA) and a litany of Industry events, she was eager to apply. Each year a competition ran by Professional Beauty Association (PBA) determines which 100 applicants can go to the annual event. This year there were over 600 applicants. Robbie will join the 100 BEACON students in what has been described as the greatest opportunity a Future Professional can take to meet and network with the top players in the industry and learn valuable information about the business side of the salon/spa world.

Beacon applications become available in early summer and will continuously be available in our Career Services office for those who wish to participate. Each applicant is required to submit a project and a short essay explaining why they should be chosen. BEACON students will participate in special Beacon Workshops, breakouts, and speaker events. Robbie is the first ever GMAI FP to be selected. Go Robbie!

On October 31st, the once titled, Master Stylist named Style Director, and now Van Michael Artistic Director, David Munn of Van Michael Salons in Atlanta Georgia visited GMAI for an educational workshop in hair coloring. Infinity and Salon Life FPs participated in a full day of outside education with half of it spent with Munn who shared tricks of the trade and entertained aspiring professionals with his fresh approach to hair color. Munn, who joined the Van Michael team in 2001, one the worlds leading salon organizations, is Van Michael’s top grossing colorist. Furthermore he continues to bring his  vast knowledge of color and hands-on teaching methods to audiences throughout the world. GMAI thanks David for his generosity and good will, enhancing our learning community with his creativity and inspiring professionalism.

The response was phenomenal as Guests of Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and Gary Manuel Salon took part in Citysearch.com’s annual Best of Citysearch poll.

Remarkably, GMAI ranked in the top three for Best Facial. Gary Manuel Salon was voted the editorial winner for Best Salon and, no surprise, Gary Manuel Salon was voted the editorial and audience winner for Color and Highlights.

Voters responded with kind words and wonderful feedback as well. The whole Gary Manuel Team sends out a heartfelt Thanks to everyone who voted. We promise to meet your expectations.
